Postcards

Recognized for the artistic talent Berta Hummel had in capturing on paper and chalk the innocence of the local children, the first edition of pictures and postcards for Berta (Sister) Hummel were created in Rottenburg and Munich in December of 1932. In 1933, at the age of 24, Berta Hummel and the Sießen Convent signed an agreement with the publisher of Ars Sacra in Munich.  By late 1933, thirty-seven Hummel pictures had been printed by the company Ars Sacra as post cards. On 4 November of 1934, copies of her work were sent to Emil Fink Verlag and were published in Das Hummel-Buch Dichtungen und Vorwort von Margarete Seemann, with 5,000 copies of a first edition of the 62-page book of her sketches and poetry along with post cards. By 1937, the “Hummel postcards” had been outlawed by the Nazi regime.

The following is a partial list of the many works that Sister Maria Innocentia Hummel created which were made into the popular postcards and thereafter the M.I. Hummel figurines. Her cards are still in production and widely collected today reflecting the excitement people still have for the talent this artist represented early in her short life.
