I was curious as to how many varieties of the M.I. Hummel HUM 184 – Latest News figurine newspapers were created. After this research, I had no idea there were so many and this is only a short list of the possible total available. This list of 37+ variations begins alphabetically with some very rare versions and will increase in number as more new headlines are located.

HUM 184 – Latest News
This very popular figurine is typically found between 5 to 5½ inches tall. Initially modeled by master sculptor Arthur Moeller in 1946, earlier versions had a square, “waffle” base with the eyes open and looking over the top of the newspaper. Later versions, beginning in the mid-1960s, had a round base with the little boy looking down at the paper as if reading it. At one time, the paper was left blank for visitors to the factory to request a certain name be placed on the paper. This would result in a great many variations available on the secondary market to collect. A few earlier Crown TMK-1 figurines were made of porcelain instead of the normal ceramic material and were a bit smaller in size. Be sure to look for these as you know they will be worth substantially more.
There is much more to the history of this certain figurine and you would be hard pressed to find any other that has the variety that this certain figurine exhibits. There may be more variations within a certain newspaper since earlier versions had the text and lines on the paper done by hand. Later on, they changed over to a decal for uniformity and greater detail. I am sure there are many more than what you will see following but this is a sampling of what you may run into with the more common names found as “Das Allerneueste”, “Münchener Presse” and “Latest News”. HUM 184 – Belgrad, Florenz, Paris, Wein, etc.
I am not too sure what this paper is referring to but I would venture to speculate that it is quite rare, if not unique. You can see that the front page curiously has a list of European cities: Belgrad, Florenz, Paris, Wien, Augsburg, Berlin, München, Nürnberg/Fürth. This one was part of a collection as located on eBay on 13 October 2021.
HUM 184 – Berliner Nachrichter
A very scarce figurine with a translation into English as Berlin News. There is no picture available yet.
HUM 184 – Bermuda News
This version, the Bermuda News is not a common release but neither is it very rare. Look for this one to add to your collection as it is certainly worth a good read. It would appear that the writing of the main heading has been worn away.
Compare this second one with the first and notice that the headlines are taking two lines instead of the first. This would be a great example to add to your collection due to the rarity of the text as well as how large it is by placing it on two lines. This certain figurine was located on eBay for a Buy It Now price of $78.00 plus $13.90 shipping from South Holland, Illinois.
HUM 184 – De Beurscourant
Translating De Beurscourant from German to English, it says The Auditor. This is the only one I have seen with this newspaper name. This Full Bee TMK-2 version was located on 12 March 2022 on eBay with a starting bid of $55.00 and a shipping charge of $10.60 from Crownsville, Maryland.

This version, the Cayman News, is not a common release but neither is it very rare. Look for this one to add to your collection as it is certainly worth a good read.
This one was located on 1 October 2021 on eBay with a Buy It Now price of $115.00 and a shipping charge of $21.20 from South Holland, Illinois.
HUM 184 – The Chancellor’s Visit
The Chancellor’s Visit was a well publicized event that made the papers all around the world, including the HUM 184 – Latest News. Look for this one to add to your collection. “The Chancellor’s Visit” figurine was marked on May 23, 1996, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, stamped on the base with both the United States & the German flags along with a Goebel signature and a 1996 date and a TMK-7 trademark. Included was a wooden base with a brass plate, a Certificate of Authenticity and #450 out of total of 4,950. Offered on 12 October 2021 for an eBay Buy It Now price of $119.95 and a shipping charge of $21.10 from Saint Petersburg, Florida, this figurine marks a significant event worth collecting.
HUM 184 – Collectible News
A possible special order, the Collectible News periodical has a very special article written about “Gerhard Skrobek visits Collectible Showcase 10-13-96” and had a figurine modified to represent the occasion with this renowned master sculptor.
HUM 184 – Daily Mail
A scarce figurine, this one happens to be a Crown TMK-1 trademark version and was offered on 12 October 2021 for an eBay Buy It Now price of $225.00 plus a shipping charge of $8.50 from Gardena, California. Marked on the underside, impressed mark and stamped ‘U.S. Zone Germany’, the signature of M.I. Hummel is incised on the base edge behind the figure’s stool. It is described as being in good condition, age related soiling, some crazing, small nick to the left of figure’s mouth, small nicks to bottom edge.
HUM 184 – Das Allerneueste
Das Allerneueste translates to English as “The very latest”. This is a fairly common, if not the most common, newspaper heading for this figurine and worth having in your collection.
HUM 184 – Der Gelderland
I don’t have much on this one yet. It was located as a group of the “Latest News” selection found on eBay on 13 October 2021.
HUM 184 – Die Rheinpfalz Kaiserslautern
An extremely rare example of the figurine, this Stylized Bee TMK-3 trademark item was made as a sample only and not offered in general production. Kaiserslautern is a large town in the middle of Germany and this newspaper is from there. This certain figurine was sold on eBay on 4 October 2021 with a price of $266.99 plus a shipping charge of $60.00 from Neutraubling, Germany.
HUM 184 – EXTRABLATT
An interesting newspape
r name which is translated into English as Extra Sheet. This trademark TMK-7 figurine is said to be extremely rare and with a name like that, it would be easy to remember. This figurine was located on eBay on 12 March 2022 with an original bid price set at $95.00 and a shipping charge of $10.50 from Crownsville, Maryland.
HUM 184 – Frankfurter Sammlerbörse News
The Frankfurter Sammlerbörse (collector’s exchange) News version of this figurine is quite uncommon and even more rare is this newspaper heading in all black according to the seller. The other version of this “paper” has the heading in red as shown above. The back page says, “Goebel / M.I. Hummel Sonderausstellung Firma der Schwatlo” which translates to, “Goebel / M.I. Hummel, a special exhibition company of the Schwatlo.” Wolfgang Schwatlo has published two very informative books on all things Hummel and can be found with the title, “MI Hummel Collector’s Guide / Collector’s Handbook”. This coincided with the 150th anniversary of the Goebel company in April of 1996 as illustrated on the front page of the newspaper.

HUM 184 – Green Bay Wins
A highly collectible figurine, the Green Bay Wins version of the Latest News was offered with an initial price of $650.00. Another located on eBay on 13 October 2021 had a Buy It Now listing of $140.00 plus a shipping charge of $25.05 from South Holland, Illinois. The headlines says, Latest News, Green Bay 35, New England 21, Champions!. Listed as a Special Gold Edition in a TMK-7 trademark, Limited Edition 1756 of 1950, it pays to shop around for a better price and to know what you are buying.

HUM 184 – The Hummel Museum
The Hummel Museum version would be a great figurine to locate and add to your collection. The museum in Germany has since closed making this item that much harder to find since it is no longer being made. Keep a sharp eye out for a good price on this one.
HUM 184 – Jugend-Länderspiel
This one was available as part of a group of figurines on eBay on 13 October 2021. The words Jugend-Länderspiel translate to Young international match. There were no details on this one yet.
HUM 184 – Island News
There have been only a few of this newspaper front page showing up in the past year that I have noticed so it may be well worth the price offered. This one was available on eBay on 30 September 2021 for a Buy It Now price of $50.95 plus $13.90 shipping from Grove City, Ohio.
HUM 184 – Latest News
With all of these numerous headline names, you would think one with the large words “Latest News” on page one would be very common. That is not the case here. Be sure to add this certain newspaper if it ever crosses your path. Chances are that it would be an earlier version. You can tell the older trademarks by the eyes of the little boy looking over the top of the newspaper.
HUM 184 – Leipzig Fair 1935
This would be a great Latest News figurine to add to your collection with the German newspaper spreading the news in 1935 about the Leipzig Fair. This announcement is where the M.I. Hummel figurines made their first public introduction to the world.
The figurine you see here is a reproduction of the 70th anniversary figurine and has two trademarks on the bottom. It has the incised Crown TMK-1 as well as the Big Bee TMK-8 trademarks. I found it offered on 30 September 2021 for a Buy It Now price of $80.00 plus a shipping charge of $17.20 from South Holland, Illinois.
HUM 184 – Looney Tunes
In celebration of Warner Bros. working with Goebel for the Looney Tunes Spotlight Collection, a special limited version of the Latest News figurine was introduced to highlight the June 1997 collaboration of the two large companies. This figurine was restricted to only 7,598 pieces.
HUM 184 – Mac’s the Man
As a sporting event recorded in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch on September 8, 1998, this item took the city by storm and was recorded for Hummel collectors with this figurine. The figurine with a TMK-7 trademark was located on 30 September 2021 on eBay with a Buy It Now price of $69.00 plus $17.20 for shipping from South Holland, Illinois.
HUM 184 – Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel
The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel version is an uncommon release and should be considered when an offer like this becomes available. The text on this one shows Sosa hitting his 66th homerun to have McGuire tie his record only 45 minutes later on 26 September 1998. The headlines then shows two days later that McGuire ended the season hitting homeruns number 69 and 70 on the last day.

One of the more common versions relating to the Munich Press newspaper, this figurine needs to be in your collection and may be found for a reasonable price.
HUM 184 – New England Patriots Super Bowl
There are quite a few football related news headlines and here is one for the February 3rd, 2002 Super Bowl where the New England Patriots scored 20 to St. Louis 7. This certain figurine was located on 13 October 2021 on eBay with a Buy It Now price of only $90.00 plus a shipping fee of $10.00 from Attleboro, Massachusetts.
HUM 184 – The Ocean Post
An interesting figurine, this Stylized Bee TMK-3 trademark item showed up on eBay on 12 March 2022 with a reserved price of $25.00 and a Buy It Now price of $79.00 plus a shipping charge of $10.50 from Crownsville, Maryland. It is reported to have two small chips on the corners of the newspaper probably resulting in the lower price asked.
HUM 184 – PANAMA American
An extremely rare example of the figurine, this Stylized Bee TMK-3 trademark item was made as a sample only and not offered in general production. This certain figurine was sold on eBay on 4 October 2021 selling for the price of $115.50 plus a shipping charge of $60.00 from Neutraubling, Germany.
HUM 184 – Philadelphia Inquirer
Considered a very rare example, possibly unique, of the Latest News series, Founded on June 1, 1829, The Philadelphia Inquirer is the third-oldest surviving daily newspaper in the United States. However, in 1962, an Inquirer commissioned historian traced The Inquirer to John Dunlap ‘s The Pennsylvania Packet, which was founded on October 28, 1771.
The seller says that he had the figurine customized in 1995 by the Goebel factory and it may be the only one with this headline in existence. The figurine, with a TMK-8 trademark, was located on eBay on 8 October 2021 with a Buy It Now price of $235.00 and free shipping from the Southeast U.S.
HUM 184 – Stars and Stripes
This version, the Stars and Stripes is not a common release but neither is it very rare. The Stars and Stripes was a newspaper put out during World War II in support of the American troops. The other side of the paper has on the back page, “The Berlin Freedom Series Edition, A Tribute to Courage”. Look for this one to add to your collection as it is certainly worth a good read.

HUM 184 – Stars and Stripes – 9/11 Sports Edition
A scarce figurine that depicts color report on the 9/11 United States event as seen from a European perspective. It also shows the solidarity and interruption in major sports events across the country and world. This item was offered on eBay on 5 September 2021 for a Buy It Now price of $174.95 plus a shipping charge of $15.00 from Gresham, Oregon.
HUM 184 – Super Bowl 1998
Here is a good example of a special sports event that was honored with the Denver Broncos Super Bowl 1998 win over the Green Bay Packers. This example was located on eBay on 30 September 2021 for a Buy It Now price of $74.99 plus a shipping charge of $10.00 from Brunswick, Ohio. This would be a great purchase for the avid Denver Broncs football fan.
HUM 184 – Tampa Bay Wins
A highly collectible figurine, the Tampa Bay Wins version of the Latest News was offered with an initial price of $389.50 from Mader’s in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on 26 January 2003. Tampa Bay won over Oakland with a score of 48 to 21. With this event reproduced on the figurine and a very limited issue of only 950 pieces, the figurine should be a good investment.

HUM 184 – Ultimas Noticias
The little figurine here has a Spanish related newspaper Ultimas Noticias which is translated to Last News. A very uncommon item, this would be a great piece to add to your collection when it becomes available. The seller marketed this as a very hard to find headline.

Considered a very rare example, possibly unique, of the Latest News series, the Washington Post newspaper has been around since 1877 and this figurine has a historical significance to many. HUM 184 – World Series 1999
The World Series baseball games are always a major event and the Goebel company jumped in with this limited version figurine to help celebrate the winning series on 27 October 1999 when the New York Yankees defeated the Atlanta Braves with a score of 4 to 1. This would be a fantastic figurine for the avid Yankees fan as I am sure this would be a very limited production piece and in great demand.
